Morpheus8: A Non-Invasive, Skin Tightening Treatment

If you’ve been searching for a minimally invasive procedure to tighten your skin and provide you with a more youthful look, Morpheus8 might be a great option to consider. At Thaxton Plastic Surgery, we are pleased to provide this skin rejuvenation treatment option for our patients. Let’s take a look at Morpheus 8 and whether or not it’s a good fit for your needs.

How Does Morpheus8 Work?

Morpheus8 is a type of collagen induction therapy. Collagen is a protein that helps our skin maintain hydration and elasticity. As we age, we produce less collagen, and this is one reason why fine lines and wrinkles begin to develop.

With Morpheus8, we use a combination of radiofrequency energy and microneedling to stimulate collagen production. The tiny microneedles in the Morpheus8 penetrate the skin causing tiny micro-injuries. These “injuries” stimulate collagen production which helps to tighten and firm up the skin.

Microneedling, such as SkinPen microneedling, is not a new procedure, but Morpheus8 not only uses RF energy, but it also penetrates more deeply into your skin than with SkinPen, which tends to produce better results. Morpheus 8 can help mold the fat under your layers of skin, and this provides us with better contouring and a more refined look than with other microneedling procedures.

Of course, patients always ask if the procedure is painful, and we do our best to minimize any discomfort. Before the procedure, we apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment areas, which will help reduce the discomfort.

Everyone’s pain threshold is unique, and some patients will bring in earbuds or headphones and listen to music or a podcast to distract them from any discomfort. On the plus side, the procedure takes only about 20-60 minutes, depending on what areas and how many areas are being treated.

What Areas Can Morpheus8 Target?

While Morpheus8 can be a great option to consider if you want to improve the firmness of your face or neck, it has many other uses, as well. We can use this treatment to reduce acne scars and reduce the appearance of stretch marks. In some cases, we also can use it to tighten up loose skin in your abdominal area. Best of all, Morpheus8 is suitable for all skin types and skin tones.

What Are Morpheus8 Side Effects? Is There Downtime?

The most common side effects from the procedure include redness and swelling in the treated area, and you will be able to see the tiny micro lesions for several days after the treatment.

Patients should not wear makeup for two or three days after treatment. We also recommend that patients use a medical-grade hyaluronic acid solution to enhance results and protect their healing skin as well as avoid direct sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

There is little to no downtime associated with Morpheus8 treatments, although we recommend taking it easy and avoiding exercise for the first few days after treatment. This gives the body time to heal and can help reduce any swelling associated with the procedure. Also, because the microneedling marks will be visible for several days, some patients prefer to avoid social situations until these marks have faded. There also may be some itchiness as the micro lesions heal, but this should resolve within a week or two at most.

When Will I See The Results? How Long Does Morpheus8 Last?

You may see some results in just a few days after treatment, but typically it takes a few weeks to see noticeable improvement as the collagen is produced and improves the look of your skin. Some patients need only one or two treatments, but usually, we recommend three consecutive treatments for optimal results.

We also recommend having this procedure (and most other cosmetic procedures) done in a board-certified plastic surgeon’s office. These types of treatments, while non-surgical, should be performed by a surgeon or by an esthetician that is supervised by a surgeon. This is not only the safest option for patients, it also tends to yield the best results and more natural-looking results.

While the results aren’t permanent, many patients will schedule a yearly maintenance treatment to extend the results. Wearing sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure during peak daylight hours also can help extend the results. Of course, we also recommend staying hydrated and cleansing and moisturizing your skin daily.

Staying hydrated, avoiding sun exposure and moisturizing are three of the easiest ways to keep your skin looking its best and to preserve your microneedling procedure or any of our other skin treatments.
