5 Amazing Benefits Of Dermaplaning
At Thaxton Plastic Surgery, we offer patients an assortment of medical spa treatments, and one of our most popular is dermaplaning. If you want a smoother, brighter complexion, dermaplaning can be a good option to consider and there are many benefits associated with this procedure.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a safe and easy way to remove vellus hair from your face, as well as dead skins cells. Vellus hair, which is often just called “peach fuzz,” is found all over our bodies, but many people prefer to have this hair removed from their face and dermaplaning provides us with a quick method for vellus hair removal.
For the procedure, our aesthetician uses a special type of scalpel to exfoliate your skin and remove this hair and the top layer of dead skin. The procedure is painless, which is a big advantage over procedures such as waxing. There can be some redness, swelling and mild soreness after the procedure, but the dermaplaning procedure itself will not be painful.
We do recommend that you avoid using exfoliants for a few days before and after the procedure, and your skin also may be more sensitive to the sun’s rays for a few days, so be sure to use a daily moisturizer with sunscreen.
Of course, we always recommend that patients wear a moisturizer or makeup with broad-spectrum coverage as this can prevent skin cancer and also just helps your skin retain moisture, elasticity and a more youthful glow in general.
Dermaplaning results tend to last for several weeks, and most of our patients will schedule new dermaplaning sessions every 4-6 weeks or perhaps just whenever you need a quick boost for your appearance. For instance, if you have a wedding or party coming up, schedule an appointment three or four days before the event. Typically, any redness associated with dermaplaning clears up within 24 hours, so you can usually schedule the procedure fairly close to any special event.
Benefits of Dermaplaning
While many people love the smoothness after we remove dead skin and vellus hair, there are a few other interesting benefits you might enjoy from dermaplaning, including:
- Fast Results & A Beautiful Glow
While you might have some swelling or redness the first day after treatment, most people notice an improvement in their skin immediately, and dermaplaning can brighten your complexion and give you a more youthful glow. Most people notice a more even skin tone, as well. There’s no downtime with dermaplaning, and after the treatment is complete, you can go right back to your normal routine.
- It’s Chemical Free!
While we do use a gentle cleanser on your skin prior to the treatment, no chemicals are used with dermaplaning, only our special scalpel. If you are searching for a natural, chemical-free way to exfoliate your skin, dermaplaning can be a great option.
- It’s Gentle On The Skin
While some redness may occur, dermaplaning does not damage the skin. We simply gently scrape away the dead skin and hair and there’s no damage done. There are at-home dermaplaning kits, but we typically recommend that you consider booking an appointment with an experienced professional aesthetician as this is the safest option.
- It Can Reduce Pore Size
Dead skin can trap oil and dirt in your skin, even with a good daily skincare regimen, and this can cause pores to become larger. Remove that dead skin and hair and the pores often reduce in size, which is always a bonus.
- Your Makeup Routine Will Improve
When we remove dead skin and hair, most people find that makeup goes on a lot smoother than before and, as dermaplaning can reduce the appearance of blotches or uneven tones in your skin, it can simply be easier to apply makeup without having to use concealers and other additional products.
Dermaplaning Is Not Ideal For Everyone
While dermaplaning can be a great option for people most skin types, it is not recommended for people with some skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema and sometimes acne or rosacea. Additionally, if your face is sunburnt presently, you will need to wait for the skin to heal before undergoing a dermaplaning treatment. If you do have conditions such as acne or rosacea, please give us a call as we may have other treatments that can help improve the look of your skin.
For instance, microdermabrasion can be beneficial for our patients with acne and acne scars, and, in some cases, you might see an improvement with rosacea as well. Microdermabrasion is a gentle exfoliating procedure that removes the top layer of dead skin cells and is a chemical-free procedure, so when you call to book an appointment, we can discuss whether dermaplaning or microdermabrasion is the best fit for your skin.
Chemical peels are another option that might work for some patients. Peels can help to remove liver spots, some freckles, uneven pigmentation, acne scars and even reduce the appearance of wrinkles. We offer three levels of chemical peels (light, medium and deep), depending on your needs, and deep chemical peel treatments can provide results that last for many years, but this is a more intensive treatment than dermaplaning or microdermabrasion.
We also offer a variety of facial treatments that include a thorough cleansing, manual exfoliation and perhaps a mask treatment, application of various serums and moisturizers to promote detoxification, hydration and anti-aging. Again, if you have a unique skin issue, not all treatments are recommended, but feel free to give us a call and let us try and create a treatment option that will help you look and feel your best.
Additionally, if you are interested in upping your skincare game, we also can provide you with various Zo Obagi products. The Zo Obagi line of skincare includes therapeutic treatments, maintenance treatments, preventative treatments and daily skincare products. We can help you decide which products are the best fit for your skin type of needs.
If you’d like to book an appointment for dermaplaning or another of our many medical spa treatments, give us a call at any time. In addition to our spa menu, we also offer a wide range of non-surgical and surgical procedures to help all of our patients achieve their desired look.
