In a significant advancement for breast reconstruction, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval for the MENTOR™ MemoryGel™ Enhance Breast Implants, which now include sizes up to 1445 cc2. This new implant line, developed by Mentor Worldwide LLC, a part of Johnson & Johnson MedTech, is designed specifically for women with larger breast cup sizes undergoing breast reconstruction and revision surgery. Women come in all shapes & sizes. Options are key to achieving a fully restored shape after breast reconstruction surgery. What does this mean? It means that our patients now have available new larger breast implants in Charleston WV.  This means more options for our patients. Thank you, Mentor!

A New Era of Inclusivity in Breast Reconstruction

The approval of the 1445 cc Mentor silicone breast implant marks a pivotal moment in the field of breast aesthetics. For years, women with larger cup sizes faced limitations in their reconstruction options, as the largest available implant size was 800 cc. This often led to compromises in achieving optimal aesthetic outcomes, as smaller implants could not adequately meet the tissue volume requirements for some women. Many of Dr. Thaxton’s patients have asked for a larger implant, one that fits their natural body shape better. The current size options topped out at the 800cc. Now, the new MemoryGel™ Enhance Breast Implants address this gap by offering an expanded range of base widths, projections, and volumes, extending from 930 cc to 1445 cc. The most common size used in the FDA approval study was the 1030 cc silicone breast implant.

Clinical Evidence and Safety

The FDA’s approval is backed by findings from the ATHENA study, a prospective, multicenter, ongoing 10-year study that demonstrated the safety and efficacy of larger-volume silicone breast implants. The study’s three-year results showed that the MemoryGel™ Enhance implants are safe and effective for women undergoing post-mastectomy, implant-based breast reconstruction. This new implant line will enable surgeons to deliver desired results for women who were previously underserved, allowing them to regain their original breast size or achieve projection and symmetry with the unaffected breast.

A Commitment to Patient Well-Being

Alenka Brzulja, Worldwide President of Mentor Worldwide LLC, emphasized the company’s commitment to inclusivity and addressing the long-standing patient need for larger breast implant options. “By expanding the choices available for breast reconstruction, we are breaking down barriers and ensuring that every woman has equal access to options tailored to her unique anatomy and preferences,” Brzulja said. The launch of the MemoryGel™ Enhance Breast Implants is set to begin in mid-2025, providing a new level of support for the overall well-being, confidence, and sense of wholeness for women undergoing breast reconstruction. That boils right down to us, at Dr. Thaxton’s office where he will be able to use the new breast implants n Charleston WV.

Looking Ahead

The approval of the 1445 cc Mentor silicone breast implant is a testament to the ongoing advancements in medical technology and the dedication to improving patient outcomes. As the field of breast reconstruction continues to evolve, innovations like the MemoryGel™ Enhance Breast Implants will play a crucial role in ensuring that all women have access to the best possible care and options tailored to their unique needs.
